intermittent fasting..a healthy way to live

About 3 years back, i wanted to shed off some extra weight so decided to change my entire eating habit. I started off by eliminating all carbohydrates (sugars, rice, bread, pastas..etc.) and adding more greens. Then i realized that my appetite was curbed, for some reason (maybe fresh veggies did the trick), and found that i dont eat as often. Then i decided to eat only when i got hungry (usually after sunset), after all, our holy prophet Muhammed (sala Allahu alayhi wa salam) has given us this advice.

In a few days, i starting reaping its many benefits and boy was i amazed! First of all, you feel light and active all day, no laziness, bloating whatsoever..just a healthy refreshing sensation. Recently, I found out that this eating habit was actually called 'Intermittent fasting' and had numerous scientifically backed benefits.

Basically, it is defined as pattern of eating that alternates between periods of fasting (drinking water only) and non-fasting. A specific form is alternate day fasting (ADF), which is a 48-hour routine typically composed of a 24-hour fast followed by a 24-hour non-fasting period. Another variation is a 20 hr period of fast followed by 4 hrs non fasting period (a bit easier)

Among the health benefits:
1-Enhances longivity: According to some studies conducted on both animal and human subject.
2-Reduces LDL (bad cholesterol) in as little as eight weeks.
3-Prevents cancers.
4-Prevents diabetes: Reduces blood sugar and insulin (high insulin levels desensitizes insulin receptors on cells against insulin)  hence prevents diabetes.
5-Enhances brain and cardiac function thereby reducing the risks of coronary artery disease and strokes.
6-In animals, shown to reduce cognitive decline in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
7- Weight loss.
8-Enhances cell repair, therefore has an anti aging effect on the body.
Studies on this subject are still under way..
But these benefits are convincing enough!

The BUSY lifestyle: effective stress relief

Be it young or middle aged, we live in a time when maintaining your career or home (or both) is a struggle and a juggle! Being busy has become a rule rather exception. Working hard is rewarding but also compromises other areas in your life, like health, leisure, social life and even love life :(
The result is fatigue, anxiety and  chronic stress (its a medical condition, by the way, that leaves u depressed lethargic and in physical pain).

So taking a brief break every now and then, is well justified (hence guilt free)  and will make all the difference and it doesnt have to take time at all.

Here are a few stress relieving tips for all the busy gurls:

A quick stress relief during the day: Sometimes when ur mind gets jammed with thoughts, u need to clear it out, reset, then start afresh and resume ur job with a more relaxed attitude..
Mind travel: First u need to tell urself to relaaaax, its not the end of the world!  Then go to a nice quiet place, with a beautiful view, if u can, and let your mind wonder to a beautiful place (i call it mind travel) just breathe slow and imagine yourself in the most beautiful exotic location on earth and enjoy the tour.. smiling while u do.
Music: can be another option. Its been scientifically proven to alleviate depression, anxiety, even physical pain! So tune into your favorite radio station for a 5 min break and listen to the kinda music/ songs u like..hey it can even be a fast paced song to get u to relax. No rules. Just what ever makes u happy :)

Other lifestyle changes to adapt to stress..

Sleep: minimum of 6 continuous hours. Most importantly is to clear your mind and remove every task or chore out of your head! This is a time to relax..ur not gonna do these things now.. just enjoy the fact that ur in bed and will finally get to sleep after a long day ..smile..Good night :)

Diet: What you eat has an astounding influence on your energy level and even your mood.
Vitamin deficiency, like B vitamins, can lead to fatigue. Even certain minerals are required to keep u energetic, like iron, calcium, iodine and zinc..
Too much simple sugars (sucrose) can give u a sugar 'high' then gets u crashing down fast, leaving u fatigued.
So include a lot of vegetables and fruits during the day and fibres (to clean you digestive tract from toxins)
Green tea, white tea and fruit juice detoxify your body, leaving you energetic.
And finally...my favourite, the 'feel good' foods: The chemicals known as endorphins and serotonin (happy hormone) leaves u feeling uplifted and euphoric. Its produced naturally in the body, but why waut till its produced! these foods contain them naturally:  Chocolate (dark), cocoa, oily fish (sardines and salmon), cheese, bananas, pineapples, turkey, dairy food, complex carbohydrates( potatoes, rice, pasta),nuts (almonds, peanuts, almonds), spicy food!

There are ways to stimulate your body's own endorphins and serotonin  :
Laughing: laughter is the best medicine! A comedy movie, a good joke..
Excercise: no wonder athletes get addicted to their sport. Also called the 'runner's high' Strenuous excercise makes the endorphins come out!
Music ( as mentioned above)
Sunshine: plenty of sunshine makes you happy! Thats why ppl get the winter blues in regions where it snows.
Healthy sex life (for the married gurls ;-) )
Eating something sweet: sweet things like dates, honey, chocolate, even candy but dont over indulge, remeber , u wanna keep healthy.

And an extra bonus; endorphins are anti aging!

Why not include a 'Serotonin diet' in your lifestyle! Read more: Serotonin diet    Serotonin diet recipes

Effective but SAFE spot lightening.

There are many causes that lead to unsightly spots on the face. Acne, sun exposure, aging, skin allergies hormonal imbalances, pregancy etc. These lead to areas of hyperpigmentation that appear as dark patches or spots.
Now, to remove them:

1- Get to the root of the problem: depending on the cause.  Acne for example is to be treated so that skin heals totally and ur left with only dark marks to deal with. Other skin problems really need a dermatologist.

2- Spot removal..
There is a variety of approaches in order to lighten dark areas. The basic goal is to reduce melanin production and/or distribution in the epidermis..
Many skin lighteneing ingredients exist but not all are safe and have a disastrous effect on your skin (accelerating skin aging) and on your overall health.
So, what are the safe ingredients to look for?

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl sulfate)
alpha arbutin
glutathione
kojic acid
mulberry leaf extract
vitamin B3 (niacinamide)
licorice extract (glabridin)
azelaic acid
retinoic acid
papaya extract (papain) esp. green papaya
soy protein extract

These are the popular choices. There are also other plant based skin whitening extracts. These are usually ombined with alpha hydroxy acids (fruit acids) like glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, etc to enhance skin turnover and thereby improving tone and glow.

They are found in the form of  soaps, lotions and toners. Combining all 3 gives faster and better results.
I have just listed the ingredients but check out more info about safe whitening ingredients

Happy shopping!

Gettin ur skin to behave!

So i've tried about every single product on the pharmacy and supermarket and now im left with a drawer full of an endless array of cleasers, washes, toners, acne meds..etc. etc.
The bottomline is..keep it simple, not only to prevent damaging your skin, but its less hectic and time consuming!
So here is what works for me:
1- Cleanse: Now this is an important step. Mild foams kinda work me but  end up leavin my skin shiny/ oily so i opt for a good solid bar of coconut oil based soap, something with a natural ingredient like honey or even better, retinoic acid, its amazing, its all you'll ever need. A good brand of retinoic acid soap is  Retinoic 2000 (philipines) and My Own. (I cant understand why the cosmetic industry isnt manufacturing more of this soap?? its the only thing that works for me and sometimes its unavailable in my country!) . Another important ingredient to look for to gain effective oil/acne/blackhead control, is salicylic acid. What it does is that it dissolves oils and sebum in your pores to unclog them. You should aim for 0.5 to 2%. Good brands include Clean and Clear, Dermadoctor, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Biore..just to name a few..
The process: i know its more than obvious but its worth mentioning for the few who dont know.. use warm water and foam you cleanser gently on ur face massaging it. If it  contains any natural ingredient/medications, allow to stay on for 2-3 mins then rise of with cold water. Simple but makes all the difference.
2- Tone: the funny part is that u may do without a toner. I use an ice cube. Works wonders..tightens pores and calms the skin. If you do prefer a toner, look for salicylic acid plus aloe vera, chamomile, witch hazel, panthenol (vitamin B5) and apply it after applying the ice cube.
3- Treat: Morning & Evening :Alpha hydroxy acid. I use 12% glycolic acid very small amount gently applied.
For spots or uneven tone, add a lotion with a Natural whitening ingredients  like licorice, mulberry leaf extract, vit C, alpha arbutin, glutathione, kojic acid, vitamin B3. Brands include: Ponds, Olay, Loreal, Diana stadler (but honestly i havent tried this brand)

Every 2-3 days a clay mask after cleansing, before ice and treatment.
Brands depends on what your skin prefers.. Even homemade masks are as effective if not better. (I will post some great mask recipes soon.)
Thats all you need plus a balanced diet. (I will post some stuff about this too :) )
